Dr Emma is an experienced Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatrist. She has completed both the Basic Psychiatry Training required to practice in General Psychiatry and, in addition, has completed an Advanced Certificate in Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatry. Dr Gilbert has interests and expertise in perinatal psychiatry, in working with parents, in family therapy and working with complex presentations.
Dr Gilbert’s approach is to see any child or adolescent in the context of their own unique story, encompassing not just what may be causing difficulties and challenges, but also their strengths, talents and values. Importantly, Dr Gilbert sees a young person in the context of their family, their interests, their activities and their wider community. While it can be important to make an accurate diagnosis – it is just as (if not more important) to understand how that diagnosis has come about, how it is impacting on the child or family’s life – and which bits we may be able to assist in doing something about. Sometimes a diagnosis may not be very clear or there might be more than one – in which case the focus may be more on understanding where a particular emotion, behaviour, habit or other personal trait might be causing distress or dysfunction – and working
together to see what might be helpful to lessen the distress or dysfunction that may be occurring.
Dr Gilbert aims to assist a young person and their family/carers to develop a greater understanding of their mental health, and to explore options that may be available to address where mental health symptoms are causing difficulties. Rather than a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach – Dr Gilbert aims to work closely with the young person and their family to tailor any recommendations for treatment or intervention. This can take some time and may mean that we need to try some different approaches to see what is the best fit for you.
Dr Gilbert will be available for appointments on Wednesdays at Sydney Psych Hub. She is available to see children and adolescents up to the age of 18 years old, who are currently seeing, or have seen in the last 6 months, one of the psychologists within Sydney Psych Hub.
