Family Therapy

At Sydney Psych Hub, we provide family therapy to support families in navigating challenges, improving communication, and strengthening relationships.

Families are complex systems, and when one person is struggling, it often impacts everyone. Family therapy provides a safe and supportive space for all members to be heard and work towards healthier patterns of interaction.

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a form of psychological support that focuses on the relationships within the family unit rather than just one individual. In this approach, a psychologist works collaboratively with family members to improve communication, reduce conflict, and explore unhelpful patterns that may be contributing to difficulties.

Together, families learn healthier ways of relating and develop strategies to support adjustment during life transitions or stressful events. Therapy also provides an opportunity to strengthen bonds between parents, children, and siblings, while fostering greater understanding and empathy. Depending on the situation, sessions may involve the whole family or smaller groupings, such as parent and child, or siblings.

Our Approach

We believe that every family is unique, and therapy should be tailored to each family’s values, needs, and goals. Our psychologists provide care that is:

Respectful & inclusive – valuing each person’s perspective and encouraging all voices to be heard
Evidence-based – using proven therapeutic approaches to support lasting change
Collaborative – working together with the whole family to set goals and find solutions
Strengths-focused – recognising the family’s existing resilience and building on these strengths

Family therapy sessions are flexible and adapted to the unique needs of each family. Depending on the situation, treatment may include:

  • Collaborative discussions that give each family member a chance to share their perspective in a safe and respectful space
  • Developing practical communication tools to reduce misunderstandings and manage conflict more effectively
  • Exploring family patterns and dynamics to identify unhelpful cycles and build healthier ways of relating
  • Strengthening problem-solving and decision-making skills to navigate challenges together
  • Supporting parents or caregivers with strategies to guide children’s behaviour and emotional wellbeing
  • Fostering empathy, understanding, and stronger emotional connections between family members
  • Planning for the future with clear, shared goals that promote resilience and unity

What to Expect at Your Appointment

The family therapy process generally includes:

  • Initial consultation: with the whole family or selected members to explore concerns and goals
  • Therapy sessions: involving family members in combinations best suited to the issues at hand
  • Individual sessions (as needed): to gain perspective or prepare for family sessions
  • Feedback and review: ongoing check-ins on progress, adjustments to strategies, and planning for the future

Follow-up sessions are typically shorter and focus on treatment progress, medication management (if prescribed), and ongoing support.
