Child & Adolescent Psychometric Assessments

At Sydney Psych Hub, we provide comprehensive psychological assessments for children and adolescents to better understand their learning, thinking, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing.

Assessments can help clarify a diagnosis, guide treatment planning, and provide valuable insights into a child’s strengths and challenges at home, school, and in social settings.

What are Psychometric Assessments?

Psychometric assessments use standardised, evidence-based tools to measure areas such as:

  • Cognitive functioning and intellectual ability
  • Attention, memory, and executive functioning
  • Academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Emotional wellbeing, behaviour, and social skills

Our psychologists combine assessment results with clinical interviews, developmental history, and input from parents/carers and teachers. This holistic approach provides a clear picture of a child’s development, learning profile, and mental health needs.

The outcome of an assessment is a detailed written report, including tailored recommendations for learning supports, treatment planning, and strategies to help children thrive at school and at home.

What We Can Help With

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)

Assessing attention, focus, impulsivity, and executive functioning

Learning Difficulties

Evaluating reading, writing, spelling, and mathematical skills

Giftedness & Twice-exceptionality:

Understanding advanced abilities alongside learning or attention challenges

Intellectual Disability

Identifying developmental delays and strengths to guide support planning

Memory & Processing Concerns

Assessing attention, working memory, and information processing speed

Mood & Behavioural concerns

Understanding the impact of anxiety, depression, or emotional regulation difficulties on functioning

School Readiness & Adjustment:

Assessing developmental, emotional, and cognitive skills to support smooth transitions into preschool, primary, or high school

Diagnostic Clarification

When overlapping symptoms make it difficult to know what’s driving a child’s challenges

Our Approach

We understand that assessments can feel overwhelming for children and families. Our psychologists provide support that is:

Compassionate & child-friendly – making the assessment experience safe and engaging for children
Thorough & evidence-based – using validated tools and up-to-date methods
Individualised – tailoring recommendations to the child’s needs, goals, and environment
Collaborative – involving parents, teachers, and other professionals (with consent) to create well-rounded recommendations

Assessments typically include:

  • A comprehensive parent interview to gather history and current concerns
  • Direct testing with the child, using age-appropriate standardised tools
  • Teacher questionnaires or input to understand school functioning
  • Feedback session to explain results and recommendations
  • A detailed written report with practical strategies for home, school, and treatment planning

What to Expect

The assessment process generally involves:

  • Initial parent consultation: to discuss history, concerns, and goals
  • Assessment sessions with the child: which may take several hours across one or more appointments
  • Scoring and interpretation: completed by the psychologist following testing
  • Feedback session:: with parents to discuss results, diagnosis (if applicable), and recommendations
  • Comprehensive written report: provided to parents, and with consent, shared with schools or healthcare providers

Follow-up sessions are typically shorter and focus on treatment progress, medication management (if prescribed), and ongoing support.

How to Access Our Service

A GP referral is not required, though may be helpful if linked to broader care planning
