Child, Adolescent, and Family Psychiatry

At Sydney Psych Hub, we understand that childhood and adolescence are critical stages of development, and mental health challenges during these times can affect a young person’s wellbeing, learning, relationships, and family life.

Our Child, Adolescent, and Family Psychiatry service provides compassionate, evidence-based care for children, teenagers, and their families.

What is Child and Adolescent Psychiatry?

Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions in young people. They bring together medical expertise, developmental knowledge, and an understanding of family systems to provide holistic care.

In addition to treating young people directly, our psychiatrists work closely with parents, caregivers, schools, psychologists, and other health professionals to ensure that support is coordinated and effective.

Our Approach

We know that seeking psychiatric care for a child or adolescent can feel overwhelming. Our approach is:

Child and family centred – recognising the important role of family and caregivers in supporting recovery
Developmentally informed – understanding that mental health needs differ at each stage of growth
Collaborative – working in partnership with families, schools, GPs, psychologists, and other care providers
Evidence-based – using the latest research and treatments tailored to each child’s needs

Treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive psychiatric assessment
  • Medication management (when appropriate)
  • Psychoeducation for families
  • Guidance and support for parents and caregivers
  • Coordination with schools and allied health professionals

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your first appointment will usually be a comprehensive assessment (60–90 minutes). This may involve meeting with both the child and their parent(s)/caregiver(s) to:

  • Explore concerns and current symptoms
  • Understand developmental, family, and school history
  • Discuss treatment options and strategies moving forward

Follow-up appointments are used to monitor progress, provide ongoing support, and adjust treatment as needed.
